Unit Goals
you will

  • recognize ways personal information provided on the internet can be used to harm the user so that they will make responsible choices in what they reveal online
  • revise screen/user names and/or passwords to apply safety standards if needed
  • refuse to communicate with strangers who exhibit grooming tactics
  • refuse to meet face-to-face with internet strangers without the permission of parents
  • recognize and report suspicious behavior by an online stranger to a trusted adult

Pre Assessment
If beginning the i-SAFE program with this lesson, administer the pre assessment online at
http://www.isafe.org by clicking on the link, Assessments, prior to the lesson. Ask Mr. Spiece for your isafe school ID#.

Lesson 1 – Safeguarding Your Identity Online
Screen Names, Passwords, Safety Resolutions

Activity 1 - Be Smart Be Safe - Reference Sheet
Print out the Be Smart Be Safe reference sheet (or use the one provided by your teacher). Use the information to write down a Safe screenname and password on the back of the reference sheet.

Activity 2 - Profile Worksheet - Worksheet
Print out (or use the one provided by your teacher) and fill out the profile worksheet. Your teacher will discuss this with you after everyone has filled it out.

Activity 3 - Brainstorming
Create two columns on the back of your profile worksheet.

  • In the first column, brainstorm a list of examples of online instances that can result from divulging personal information.
  • In the second column, brainstorm a list of safety rules/tips that can help people respond appropriately to online requests for personal information.

Activity 4 - Assessment - Online Quiz

Lesson 2 – Protecting Personal Information

Activity 1 - Resource Article - Article
Read the resource article along with the teacher. There will be a discussion following the reading of the article. On the back of the article brainstorm how this could have been prevented.

Activity 2 - Indirect Information - Reference Page
Students will take turns reading the information aloud and a discussion will follow.

Activity 3 - Peer to Peer Activity
Your teacher will split you into small groups and as a group you will discuss the following:

  • What mistakes did Brittany make that lead her into potential danger?
  • What are some potential areas students could find themselves in trouble over: Screen name, Password Revealing personal information, Not asking for adult help

Now, in your groups draft a set of rules for home use to guide safe Internet use. Take into account the rules your parents might want you to include.
