Unit Goals
you will

  • recognize ways personal information provided on the Internet can be used to harm the
    user
  • make responsible choices in what they reveal online
  • revise screen/user names and/or passwords to apply safety standards, if needed
  • refuse to communicate with strangers who exhibit grooming tactics
  • refuse to meet face to face with Internet strangers without permission from parents
  • recognize and report suspicious behavior by an online stranger to a trusted adult
  • refuse to be a willing participant in inappropriate online relationships

Pre Assessment
If beginning the i-SAFE program with this lesson, administer the pre assessment online at
http://www.isafe.org by clicking on the link, Assessments, prior to the lesson. Ask Mr. Spiece for your isafe school ID#.

Lesson 1 – Your Online Safety: Understanding the Issues

Activity 1: Survey - Survey Sheet
Print out the Student Survey sheet (or use the one provided by your teacher). Fill out the survey by circling the best answer to each question. This assignment is anonymous and you do not have to put your name on your sheet.

Lesson 2 – Proactive Protection Online

Activity 1 - Peer-to-Peer Activity
The instructor will now split the class into 5 groups. Each group will create a presentation on one of the following topics:

Use PowerPoint (or other presentation software), and design a minimum of two— maximum of five—slides to explain and educate others on the topic. Students feel free to use i-SAFE artwork and graphics in their slide shows.
Be prepared to present their topic using their PowerPoint slides to the rest of the class .

As a class, we will go over this entire document in order to insure your understanding. This document will be an excellent resource in the following activity.

Activity 3 - Group Activity - Cause and Effect
As a group, discuss and answer all of the scenarios on the cause and effect sheet.
